Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi Asia Ltd held a "Hitachi Young Leaders Initiative Alumni Forum" in Singapore from July 5 to 6, 2010. The Hitachi Young Leaders Initiative (HYLI) was launched in 1996 to offer university students from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam opportunities to raise their awareness of common issues in Asia by taking part in forums, panel discussions and community activities. This year's program was organized as a special 10th edition to celebrate the success of HYLI and Hitachi's 100th anniversary. All HYLI alumni who have attended the program since its inception were invited and the event drew about 250 people, including alumni and guests from government, industry and academia. The main theme of this event was "Driving Asia to a new paradigm – what is Asia's role in the global arena?". On the first day guest of honor Mr. Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense, Singapore, spoke about his hopes for bright young leaders able to respond to rapid social changes and contribute to society as Asia's role in the world changes dramatically. Dr. Tsutomu Kanai, Chairman Emeritus of Hitachi, Ltd. also conveyed his gratitude to those who have been supporting the program. On the second day, Ambassador Muhamad Noor Yacob, APEC's Fixed Term Executive Director, gave a keynote speech which was followed by presentations on social infrastructure, the financial landscape and the environment by experts and lively panel discussions by the participants. The event was a good opportunity for alumni to renew old friendships and acquaintances and learn about the activities other former participants have been engaged in since finishing the program.
